Iteris Inc. Subsidiary Awarded $750,000 Contract by the County of Sacramento; MMA to Implement Second Phase of Sacramento County Traffic Operations Systems

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 2000--Meyer Mohaddes Associates, a subsidiary of Iteris Inc. and leading supplier of intelligent transportation systems, has been awarded a $750,000 contract by Sacramento County, to begin Phase II of the Sacramento County Traffic Operations Center (TOC).

The project is expected to take 18 months to complete.

Elements of the contract include feasibility and design work, complete system integration and a review of the operations and maintenance plan for Sacramento's TOC. This project is part of the Sacramento Transportation Division's effort to improve traffic management capabilities countywide.

"Our goal with this program is to initiate the collaboration of all modes of transportation, something that every metropolitan area needs to do," said Tom Zlotkowski, chief of the Sacramento Transportation Division.

"This project gives Sacramento the opportunity to take the lead in establishing the standard for transportation communication networks and effective, efficient regional traffic management," said Zlotkowski.

The proposed new system for Sacramento County consists of an extensive fiber communication network, more than 20 CCTV cameras and multiple changeable message signs. All data collected along the corridors in the system will be communicated back to the Sacramento County Traffic Operations Center.

"With this system in place, the county staff will more readily be able to access the corridors to remotely monitor operations and verify and respond to operational issues. The end result is that it will allow them the ability to better manage the entire arterial system, reducing congestion for commuters," said Abbas Mohaddes, president and chief executive officer of Meyer Mohaddes Associates.

MMA will initially begin design and feasibility work on the Watt Avenue Transit Priority and Mobility Enhancement Demonstration Project, to improve traffic flow on the 15-mile Watt Avenue Corridor in Sacramento County. MMA will make strategic improvement determinations based upon previous studies they conducted in Phase I of the Sacramento County project coupled with more recent innovations within the transit operations field.

Secondly MMA will perform system integration for all components of the project. As a key element, they will develop, implement, integrate and test a graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI will enable traffic managers to monitor and control the entire Sacramento County traffic management system from a single location.

It will provide them the network interface to select and control CCTV cameras installed in the field, view video imagery, create or edit messages appearing on changeable message signs, select timing plans for intersection management, and view a congestion data overlay on a local map. The GUI will be designed to accommodate future plans for the exchange of data and control with Regional Transit, Caltrans and other local traffic management systems.

"Not only will this system allow us better management capabilities of our transportation infrastructure, it will enable us to make better resource allocation decisions. With this system in place, we will no longer have to send a technician out into the field to perform minor adjustments, or fine-tuning for synchronization. We'll be able to make all of the adjustments with just the touch of a screen. It's a quantum leap in efficiency for us in Sacramento County," said Zlotkowski.

Once the Watt Avenue Transit Priority and Mobility Enhancement Demonstration Project and the system integration tasks are complete, MMA will focus on support required by the Sacramento County TOC in terms of staffing levels, associated training, maintenance and funding issues.
